There were many programs that companies could purchase to start their own TQM practice. Facilitation of inter- and intra-organizational learning occurred. This led to the evolution of Six Sigma by Motorola, which has become the new standard. Companies created their own way of doing TQM and others copied it.
We find that much of what it done recently is done in stealth and not shared widely. Perhaps the Society should fund awards for corporations who share their stories. There was a Deming Prize and Baldridge Award for corporations who applied TQM.
Perhaps we need to double down on K-12 education to make ST easier. ST did this for SD, but the tools are still considered very difficult for most people. TQM tools were assembled and developed and simplified so that it was not necessary to have strong aptitude in order to apply the tools. There were a few nuggets from the text that seem relevant: At the time, TQM and SD were both, arguably, in their infancy. Why did I want to read it? To see if I could find any clues as to why #systemdynamics is not as ubiquitous in organizations as #totalqualitymanagement (now superseded by Motorola's #sixsigma - an improved version). Fortunately, it was only 58 pages - since it was for an MBA and near the end of the time when that requirement was still foisted upon MIT Sloan School of Management by Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Upon reflection, it seemed I should actually read the whole thing again. I had not, but his question sparked a desire to take a look at the document again.
